Altavia Anniversary
Legends of Arthur

Saturday, May 12, 2012

"Then was Arthur wroth, and said to himself, "I will ride to the churchyard, and take the sword with me that sticketh in the stone; for my brother Sir Kay shall not be without a sword this day."“ -- Book I, Ch. v, Le Morte d'Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory

Salutations good gentles! We invite one and all to come make Altavia’s 29th Anniversary 'Legendary'! We'll be a-questing for Altavian champions in Armored, Rapier, A&S, and Youth – So join us May 12, 2012 at Veteran's Park in Sylmar as we as celebrate the 'Legends of King Arthur'!

The tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table are an amalgamation of history and fact taken from across the centuries and drawn from many cultures. Our theme for the day is basically 'All things Arthurian'. So come dressed as your interpretation of a character from the tales; Arthur, Launcelot, Guinevere, Merlin, Morgan le Fay... Sir Epinogris anyone?!! Turn your pavilion into Camelot! Perhaps you are a dreaded Saxon Thegn, or a Roman General? A Fair Maiden in distress? Anything from the Period stories, poems and tales will be welcome!

Our Armored Combat Tournament will be single elimination. However, an 'artistic' presentation made to our A&S staff (preferably on the theme) grants a second life! Much like at Unbelted. For those wanting to submit armor and the like as their entry, keep in mind that 'artistic' means that there is some decorative or beautiful quality to your entry – not just “I made these elbow cops” but “I tooled and painted these leather elbows.” Something beyond what is required from the item to be able to simply use it on the field. The point of all this is to add some more A&S to the day, not stress anyone out, so don't worry, your best will be good enough!!! Additionally, this presentation can be (but is not required to be) entered into our A&S competition if so desired. NOTE – the entry must be left in the A&S pavilion for the day, so it cannot be something you need to fight.

Our current Champion, Lord Nathaniel Longbow, has determined the format for our Rapier Tourney and it will be Swiss Five fought in pools with the two most successful from each pool gathering to fight single elimination with the other victors of their pools. A second life can be gained by an A&S entry for the single elimination portion of the fighting. Finals will be a best out of 3.

Our Arts and Science Competition is open to any creative art or science, functional or not; and entries inspired by the Arthurian Mythos are greatly preferred. YOU will decide the Champion of the day as it is a People’s Choice. All entries must be in by 2pm, but voting will run until just before closing court.

Along with the other championship tourneys there will be various activities during the day – a Limited Item raffle, a Grail Quest – and more!!

Also, in an attempt to get those attending more involved with the theme, there is going to be a special competition going on throughout the day – Legends and Lore!! Each visiting Barony, Household, War Band etc. can pick any aspect of the Arthurian Legends – anyone or thing from any and all of the period versions (pre 1650); then come up with some way to showcase this person, item, or event. It can be as simple as duct-taping a Green feather to the helm of your local Knight of the Society and proclaiming “They are Sir Pelinore for today” or as complicated as your imagination, inclination, and inspiration allow!!!

Watch this webpage for more details on the day’s activities as they develop.
